INFORMATION
"Bye Bye" is the second single from Mariah Carey's 11th studio album "E=MC²" and was released on April 7, 2008. It was co-written by Mariah Carey, Johntá Austin, Mikkel S. Eriksen & Tor Erik Hermansen. It was co-produced by Mariah Carey & Stargate. After promoting the song on shows such as "American Idol" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show" it debuted as the "Hot Shot Debut" at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #19. "Bye Bye" wasn't as successful as her first single "Touch My Body" and considered a flop by many. The song received a nomination at the "2008 Teen Choice Awards" for favourite R&B track.
In her own words:
"Sometimes when I'm writing a song like "Bye Bye", it does come from such a raw
place that I'm like, I'm actually crying while writing it, or thinking about
it. But sometimes I will hear it and go 'I feel like this is gonna touch a
lot of people.' And that's why it's important, that no matter what's ever
happened to me throughout my career, that I stay the course and continue to
write and try and reach people who need it, because I know that I'm one of
those people. When someone does that and they write something that touches
me, I'm like indebted to them forever."
The music video was directed by Justin Francis, who also directed the video for "No One" by Alicia Keys, which won "Best R&B Video" at the 2008 MVPA Awards. The video shows various scenes of her and husband Nick Cannon, along with pictures of deceased people, including her father Alfred Roy, Luther Vandross and many others.

Rap-Up

"This for my people who just lost somebody / Put your hand way up high." A song everyone can relate to because it deals with losing a family member or friend. It will get some listeners teary-eyed. Mariah speaks to her father who passed away in 2002: "You never got a chance / To see how good I've done / And you never got to see me / Back at number one." Looks like this will be the album's second single and probably Mariah's 19th No. 1.
ABOUT
Nothing is ever a sure bet to be a #1 hit, but it seems like Mariah Carey's new single "Bye Bye," the second from upcoming album E=MC², is about as close as it gets. Co-produced by Stargate and co-written by Johnta Austin, one of the writers behind the mega-smash "We Belong Together," the song has a universal lyrical appeal and the instant feel of a Mariah Carey classic.
Mariah states the topic of the song upfront singing "This is for my peoples who just lost somebody." Loosely based around Mariah Carey's loss of her own father, "Bye Bye" has a universal appeal that may even bring some listeners to tears. Mariah is expected to perform the song Monday, April 14th on Oprah and again Wednesday, April 16th on American Idol.

The last time Mariah Carey and Johnta Austin collaborated, it resulted in the two biggest hits of Carey's career with "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us." So it should come as no surprise that "Bye Bye" is another gem with multi-format hit potential. While Carey has delivered her share of great uptempo hits throughout the years, some might agree that nowadays MC sounds best on records that evoke this kind of emotion and passion. Carey knows how to connect with the audience on a personal level and this song about loss is no exception and is sure to strike a chord with many. Songwriting is an art and no one has perfected that art form better than Mariah Carey, who has delivered a single that is destined to be her nineteenth #1 hit. BET ON IT!

Simplicity at it's best... Take one Mariah Carey and add just a dash of Stargate and you have a recipe for magic as Miss Carey pulls an utterly delicious track out the bag
The Mariah album E=MC² looks to be shorter than usual on ballad type of material- that is so often distinctly handled by the record breaking diva. The production on this track is first class via the Stargate boys, who surely must be in line for a second release from the album with the infectious 'That Chick' (but that's another review).
For all you lovers out there be prepared to break-up and make-up to this one as only Mariah Carey can deliver starters, main course and afters all in one go! An absolutely stunning track, sung in an absolutely stunning manor by an absolutely stunning diva. And I normally hate Bye Bye's!

One "Touch" was enough to convince the masses that at 38, Mariah Carey is as much a chart tigress as anyone half her age. Sure enough, "E=MC2" launch single "Touch My Body" became her 18th No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single. That playful romp is followed by a reminder that Mimi is as capable of putting a weighty message in front without sacrificing melodic juice. "Bye Bye" offers comfort for anyone suffering loss: "This is for my peoples who just lost somebody, your best friend, your baby, your man or your lady/Lift your head to the sky, cos we will never say bye." A tinkly piano-driven groove escorts the lyrical embrace, with oozy synths, a flush of R&B via male shout-outs of "Eh!" and a vocal that builds to a fitting tour-de-force crescendo, though pushed down in the mix to maintain decorum. "Bye" seems poised to have Carey greet the top of the pops for a 19th time. --Chuck Taylor
