Bye Bye

Bye Bye Single Cover

INFORMATION

"Bye Bye" is the second single from Mariah Carey's 11th studio album "E=MC²" and was released on April 7, 2008. It was co-written by Mariah Carey, Johntá Austin, Mikkel S. Eriksen & Tor Erik Hermansen. It was co-produced by Mariah Carey & Stargate. After promoting the song on shows such as "American Idol" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show" it debuted as the "Hot Shot Debut" at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #19. "Bye Bye" wasn't as successful as her first single "Touch My Body" and considered a flop by many. The song received a nomination at the "2008 Teen Choice Awards" for favourite R&B track.

In her own words:
"Sometimes when I'm writing a song like "Bye Bye", it does come from such a raw
place that I'm like, I'm actually crying while writing it, or thinking about
it. But sometimes I will hear it and go 'I feel like this is gonna touch a
lot of people.' And that's why it's important, that no matter what's ever
happened to me throughout my career, that I stay the course and continue to
write and try and reach people who need it, because I know that I'm one of
those people. When someone does that and they write something that touches
me, I'm like indebted to them forever."

The music video was directed by Justin Francis, who also directed the video for "No One" by Alicia Keys, which won "Best R&B Video" at the 2008 MVPA Awards. The video shows various scenes of her and husband Nick Cannon, along with pictures of deceased people, including her father Alfred Roy, Luther Vandross and many others.

Rap-Up
by Jonathan Reyes

"This for my people who just lost somebody / Put your hand way up high." A song everyone can relate to because it deals with losing a family member or friend. It will get some listeners teary-eyed. Mariah speaks to her father who passed away in 2002: "You never got a chance / To see how good I've done / And you never got to see me / Back at number one." Looks like this will be the album's second single and probably Mariah's 19th No. 1.

ABOUT

Nothing is ever a sure bet to be a #1 hit, but it seems like Mariah Carey's new single "Bye Bye," the second from upcoming album E=MC², is about as close as it gets. Co-produced by Stargate and co-written by Johnta Austin, one of the writers behind the mega-smash "We Belong Together," the song has a universal lyrical appeal and the instant feel of a Mariah Carey classic.

Mariah states the topic of the song upfront singing "This is for my peoples who just lost somebody." Loosely based around Mariah Carey's loss of her own father, "Bye Bye" has a universal appeal that may even bring some listeners to tears. Mariah is expected to perform the song Monday, April 14th on Oprah and again Wednesday, April 16th on American Idol.

The last time Mariah Carey and Johnta Austin collaborated, it resulted in the two biggest hits of Carey's career with "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us." So it should come as no surprise that "Bye Bye" is another gem with multi-format hit potential. While Carey has delivered her share of great uptempo hits throughout the years, some might agree that nowadays MC sounds best on records that evoke this kind of emotion and passion. Carey knows how to connect with the audience on a personal level and this song about loss is no exception and is sure to strike a chord with many. Songwriting is an art and no one has perfected that art form better than Mariah Carey, who has delivered a single that is destined to be her nineteenth #1 hit. BET ON IT!

Blues & Soul Reviews

Simplicity at it's best... Take one Mariah Carey and add just a dash of Stargate and you have a recipe for magic as Miss Carey pulls an utterly delicious track out the bag

The Mariah album E=MC² looks to be shorter than usual on ballad type of material- that is so often distinctly handled by the record breaking diva. The production on this track is first class via the Stargate boys, who surely must be in line for a second release from the album with the infectious 'That Chick' (but that's another review).

For all you lovers out there be prepared to break-up and make-up to this one as only Mariah Carey can deliver starters, main course and afters all in one go! An absolutely stunning track, sung in an absolutely stunning manor by an absolutely stunning diva. And I normally hate Bye Bye's!

Billboard

One "Touch" was enough to convince the masses that at 38, Mariah Carey is as much a chart tigress as anyone half her age. Sure enough, "E=MC2" launch single "Touch My Body" became her 18th No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single. That playful romp is followed by a reminder that Mimi is as capable of putting a weighty message in front without sacrificing melodic juice. "Bye Bye" offers comfort for anyone suffering loss: "This is for my peoples who just lost somebody, your best friend, your baby, your man or your lady/Lift your head to the sky, cos we will never say bye." A tinkly piano-driven groove escorts the lyrical embrace, with oozy synths, a flush of R&B via male shout-outs of "Eh!" and a vocal that builds to a fitting tour-de-force crescendo, though pushed down in the mix to maintain decorum. "Bye" seems poised to have Carey greet the top of the pops for a 19th time. --Chuck Taylor

"Touch My Body"
Review by Bob Burke

How does an artist follow-up one of their biggest selling albums that included two number one singles when most had written the artist off as a causality of being relevant or not? If you're Mariah Carey, you keep it simple, and that's one thing MC has done with her debut single from her forthcoming album, E=MC². "Touch My Body" (co-written and produced with Tricky Stewart and The-Dream) is the perfect lead track to re-ignite her most passionate fan base, who've kept her relevant through good times and bad... times are pretty good for Mariah nowadays! This mid-tempo track is pure fun, sounding at times reminiscent of another Carey gem, "Always Be My Baby," but yet different enough to sound like something totally fresh and new. Mariah's vocal range is also kept in check and fits the song to perfection. The hypnotic "Touch My Body... My Body" hook is sure to stick after one-listen. While the thought of Mariah Carey exceeding expectations remains a question, simply because the bar she's set is so high, matching them is a good way to start. This "body" of work sounds like a hit! BET ON IT!

Entertainment Weekly
Snap judgment: Mariah Carey's new single, 'Touch My Body'

You've waited so patiently, Mariah Carey fans; nearly three years since the release of 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi. Behold, then, the Mariah Motherlode: Not only was her upcoming album's title released today (it's E=MC², physics fans!), but a sneak peak at a new track dropped online

It's not a bad mid-tempo jam -- sunny, flirty, and syncopated just the way Mimi likes it; basically, classic Carey. But allow us to offer one quibble: What the eff is going with this recent Diva Cougar Complex? Janet just dropped an album full of bathroom-wall come-ons, and now Mariah, who used to be all, "I had a vision of love," is cutting straight to "TOUCH MY MONKEY! TOUCH IT!" Are we being overly Amish here, or would it be nice to retain a little mystery? Your comment board awaits!

Slant Magazine
Single Review: Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body"
by Sal Cinquemani

Those wondering how Mariah Carey could possibly top the inane title of 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi need wonder no more. Yesterday it was announced that the singer's 10th album, which drops on Tax Day, will be titled Energy Equals Mass Times the Velocity of Light Squared, or more specifically, E=MC². It's either a stroke of sheer self-effacing brilliance or a sign that Mimi has officially fallen off her rocker.

The album's lead single, "Touch My Body," isn't exactly filled with combustible energy and it lacks the full-throttle belting that accompanied the Return of the Voice three years ago, but it features all of the characteristics one expects from a latter-day Mariah track: rapid-fire verses (she slows down only to warn her clandestine lover about his loose lips: "I will hunt you down"), coquettish vocals (the lyrics are racy without being raunchy, so that means no mentions of heavy-flow days, but there is a reference to a sex tape popping up on YouTube), and of course, a memorable hook. There are shades of both "Always Be My Baby" (good) and "Shake It Off" (bad), but "Touch My Body" also harks back to, dare I even say it, Like a Virgin-era Nile Rodgers.

Think "Angel"--that is, not a whole lot of bass but plenty of plinky, synthetic-sounding keyboards and bouncy rhythms. The song's biggest flaw is its attempt at hip, pop-culture-referencing lyrics: "They be all up in my business like a Wendy [Williams] interview," she sighs. "Touch My Body" strikes me more as good album filler than lead single material (it's no "Fantasy" or "Honey"; hell, it's not even another "It's Like That"), but it's worth noting that I found "We Belong Together" a little boring the first time I heard it too--and that thing tanked faster than Glitter.

Mariah's New Sex Tape-Themed Smash

WHO: Mariah Carey
WHAT: "Touch My Body"
WHY: While Mariah's new album, E=MC², is set to be one of the year's biggest, this introductory single is downright subtle - yet effective. Co-written by The-Dream and produced by Tricky (a.k.a. the dudes behind "Umbrella"), "Touch My Body" rides the same never ending snap blueprint T-Pain used to brilliant effect on last year's feather-light super hit "Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin')." You won't mind hearing it on the radio and TV every 10 minutes for the next few months - this thing sooths as it repeats. Here, Mariah is focused on one thing: "Come on and give me what I deserve and touch my body," she coos. And make no mistake, she wants to be touched on her terms only: "Cause if you run your mouth and brag about this secret rendezvous, I will hunt you down." She even thinks about the possible ramifications of her touchy tryst when she sings, "If there's a camera up in here then I best not catch this flick on YouTube" (nevermind the fact that the video in question would never get past YouTube censors). A pop genius making genius pop.

Los Angeles Times
The Mariah formula: First listen on 'Touch My Body'
by Todd Martens

Pop star Mariah Carey unveiled today her new single and the science-friendly title of her new album, "E=MC²," due April 15. The title alone already does Janet Jackson one better. The latter went all sci-fi with her latest video, "Feedback," but Mariah is cutting out the B-movie trappings and going straight to the equation.

So is Mariah unveiling her inner Albert Einstein with the title? Or is she leaking the formula that goes into crafting a mega-hit?

E = extreme, acrobatic-like wailing.

M = multimillion-dollar production team. (Billboard.com writes that the A-list lineup cooking with Mariah in the M lab includes Jermaine Dupri, will.i.am, Stargate and Bryan Michael Cox, among others.)

C2 = Club songs multiplied by colossal ballads.

All right, so the title is certainly a not-so-subtle nod to her top-selling 2005 album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." The first single, "Touch My Body," hit radio today. It was produced by C "Tricky" Stewart and The Dream, the pair who worked on Rihanna's Grammy-winning "Umbrella."

So how is it? "Touch My Body" rides a relatively restrained slow-dance groove, with some light, orchestral-synth flourishes thrown in. The rhythm is almost completely carried by an effortless keyboard bump, the easygoing repetitiveness of which eventually wears the listener down, and sets up a delicate frame for Carey to sing around.

She pulls back when the song picks up the pace, and Carey keeps it simple here, playing with tempos rather than range. Indeed, she almost quietly slides into the chorus. "If you run around and brag about this secret rendezvous, I will hunt you down," she sings, letting the last line trail off. But you don't necessarily believe her, as the feel is more playful that sinful.

The song will be getting the full blockbuster treatment, as "Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner shot the video for the cut.

Tricky Stewart Scores Mariah's 1st Single
from Business Wire

Mariah Carey, the most successful female recording artist in history with total album, single and video sales of more than 160 million worldwide, and Island Def Jam Records announced this week the most eagerly anticipated album of the year, E=MC².

The first single "Touch My Body," written and produced by Tricky Stewart, Mariah Carey and The-Dream, blasted worldwide on February 12. The release of her new album is due in stores April 15.

Tricky Stewart and Redzone Entertainment, who have an exclusive international management agreement with UOMO Media, are having an exceptional year to date. Winning the Grammy in the Best Rap/Sung category for Rihanna's "Umbrella" featuring Jay Z, has made these producers some of the most sought after commodities in the industry. By rolling out hits for artists such as Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Celine Dion, Tricky Stewart and Redzone have shown consistency with which they create top selling music.

"We congratulate Tricky and Redzone on the commercial release of another great piece of work and are confident that the single 'Touch My Body' will be a chart topping success," commented Mr. Camara Alford, CEO and Chairman of UOMO Media.

ABOUT.com

This is unlikely to be a knockout smash hit on the magnitude of Mariah Carey's 2005 comeback "We Belong Together." However, with a career record of 17 #1 pop singles, Mariah Carey does not need to hit a grand slam every time out. That said, "Touch My Body" is simple, sexy elegance from one of the most enduring of pop stars. Mariah Carey has mastered that most difficult of feats in the pop world - aging gracefully.

Pros
• The simple, graceful elegance of Mariah's performance
• Clever, sexy lyrics
• Finger snapping beat

Cons
• Musically so slight it may be easy to forget

At age 37, it would seem that Mariah Carey might have to struggle to remain relevant in a pop music world that reveres youth in the form of a Chris Brown or Rihanna. On the contrary, Mariah Carey makes stardom look effortless and sexiness sound eternal. On her latest single she has delivered a simple, elegant performance that has already sent pop radio programmers scrambling to add "Touch My Body" to their playlists.

Terius "The-Dream" Nash, and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, key members of the team that helped make "Umbrella" a smash, deliver songwriting and production with a sure-handed if light pop sensibility. Lyrically, "Touch My Body" is overtly sexy without being dirty and clever in its warning to keep the song's tryst off YouTube. The gentle finger-snapping beat will send countless fans dancing in private reveries.

Oh, Mariah, where have you been? It's been four long years since your triumphant return with "We Belong Together," and three since last hit "Don't Forget About Us." Granted, you disillusioned once or twice, tip-toeing into hip-hop-but you've long been forgiven for the likes of "Boy (I Need You)" with Cam'ron and "I Know What You Want" with Busta Rhymes. "Touch My Body," the first single from 11th studio album "E=MC²" (April 15), is a No. 1 just waiting to pounce the Billboard Hot 100. Written by Carey with The-Dream-who penned Grammy Award-winning radio staple "Umbrella" for Rihanna-this sensual jam is 100% Mariah, packed with satisfying harmonic layers and hooky background "oh's," supersonic verses and a chorus as catchy as a winter sniffle. According to mariahdaily.com, 65 stations played the song five hours after its digital release to radio. Smells like a smash and looks like 2008=MC's 18th year of chart-toppers.

Rolling Stone
by Evan Serpick

The Dream - who traded in vaginal metaphors as co-writer of Rihanna's "Umbrella" - takes a slightly more literal approach to the female anatomy as co-writer of this hyperdirty single from Mimi's forthcoming album, E=MC². Mariah's storied vocal range is blunted in favor of generic, highly digitized heavy breathing: "Touch my body/Put me on the floor/Wrestle me around/Play with me some more." But with a spare, slick track composed mostly of synths and finger snaps, beat master Tricky Stewart (who produced Mary J. Blige's "Just Fine") creates the perfect backdrop for the singer to ditch the rainbows and charms and score with a sex romp that went to radio just in time for Valentine's Day.

Obsessed Single Cover

INFORMATION

The lead single from Mariah's 12th studio album was announced via Twitter on June 9, 2009. The song was later released to radio the following Tuesday, June 16. It debuted on Chicago radio station B96 at 2:00 pm.

The official Obsessed remix featuring Gucci Mane was played on radio within hours of the premier of the single.

Many fans and critics alike speculate that the song is directed towards rapper Eminem who states that him and Mariah have had a relationship in the early 2000's. However Mariah has feverishly denied this accusations. On the 2003 Charmbracelet album Mariah used clever lyrics to discuss the issue on Clown. However Eminem wanted the last blow and released Bagpipes from Bagdad in which he states "Mariah, what's ever happened to us, why did we have to break up" and "I mean I really want you bad you cunt, Nick you had your fun, I've come to kick you in your sack of junk". Obsessed appears to be Mariah's response.

The song was released to iTunes on Monday July 7.

Mariah on Obsessed:

"Uptempo fun summer record"
"Obsessed had to come outfirst"
"It's different for me, but clearly, it's so me!"

Mariah started filming the Obsessed video on June 28th and finished on June 29th. The video was directed by Brett Ratner, who also directed I Still Believe, Heartbreaker, Thank God I Found You, It's Like That, We Belong Together, and Touch My Body. The video was shot in The Plaza Hotel in New York City.

In the video Mariah playes the role of her 'stalker' who happens to be the opposite sex. Yes, Mariah dressed in drag and did it justice. This alter ego has been named Michael Caligiuri (sharing the same initials as Mariah).

Mariah Carey Fires Back at Eminem in New Single "Obsessed"

"Obsessed," the first single from Mariah Carey's upcoming album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, debuted on Chicago's B96 radio today, and - surprise - it seems like the song is targeting Eminem, who recently started a beef with Carey and her husband Nick Cannon with the Relapse song "Bagpipes From Baghdad. "I was like, why are you so obsessed with me?" Carey asks before the song even begins.

In "Bagpipes," Eminem rapped, "Mariah, what ever happened to us, why did we have to break up… Nick Cannon better back the f**k up. I'm not playing, I want her back, you punk." Mariah's response? "You're delusional, boy, you're losing your mind," Carey sings over choppy synths, with a dash of Auto-Tune dabbed on her voice. "It must be weed, it must be the E… Why are you so obsessed with me? Lying that you're sexing me." Carey adds some more barbs, like "Telling the world how much you miss me, but we never were so why you trippin' " and provoking the rapper with "You're a mom & pop, I'm a corporation. I'm a press conference, you're a conversation." The biting mid-tempo track is already more musically and lyrically engrossing than E=MC2's singles.

In case you missed the radio debut, the diva's own official Website promises to post the song at 4 p.m. ET today. The news comes straight from Carey's updated Twitter, which not only revealed the "Obsessed" single cover art, which features a drenched Mariah, but also announced that Memoirs will hit stores on August 25th. As for the "Obsessed" video, Rush Hour's Brett Ratner will once again direct Carey, having already made the "We Belong Together" and "Touch My Body" clips. The video is expected out soon.

"Obsessed" was produced by the duo of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who also produced the majority of Memoir according to Carey's official site. "Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs ever. I love the whole album. I'm completely immersed in it. I can't wait for you to hear it," Carey previously wrote on her Twitter about "Obsessed," adding that the song already has a remix all ready to go.

Mariah Carey's "Obsessed" single takes down Eminem Whoa!

Could this be the first time a diva trumps a rapper in a hip-hop beef?Mariah Carey throws some elbows on her new single “Obsessed” – the first track from her upcoming “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” (Island) due out Aug. 25, which debuted on radio this afternoon – and they’re all landing on her tormentor Eminem.

“Why you so obsessed with me? Lying that you’re sexing me?” the Greenlawn native sings in the chorus, before delivering the kiss-off “You’re delusional. Boy, you’re losing your mind.” Despite the harsh words – tossing around digs like “You’re a mom-and-pop, I’m a corporation” and referring to his “Napoleon complex” – Carey plays it cool on the track that she co-wrote with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

She coos confidently, riding the laid-back beat, probably holding back the laughs as she insults again. It plays far smoother than her husband Nick Cannon’s fiery response last month to Eminem’s “Bagpipes from Baghdad,” where Eminem raps about taking Carey back from him and then calls her a “[expletive] whore.” Of course, the Mariah-Eminem flak goes back for years, after he claimed they were in a six-month relationship, which Carey denies.

“Your legacy has now been tainted from this day forth!” Cannon wrote (and then retracted) on his blog. “You will now be known as the rapper who lost to corny-ass Nick Cannon!” But “Obsessed” seems to go even farther. Eminem was torn down by Mariah herself. Right now, it's MC: 1, EM 0.

Review: Mariah Carey's new single, 'Obsessed'

Without ever mentioning his name, Mariah Carey takes on Eminem in her new single, "Obsessed."

The song, which bowed today, is a rhythmically-driven, mid-tempo slice of summer delight, full of insults delivered in a innocent, sugary sweet questioning way by Carey, which only adds to its appeal.

Instead of anger, she's as gentle as a lamb here (yes, lamb reference is 100% intentional), practically dripping in saccharine while she lays down blow after blow at someone (just in case it isn't Enimem, but it is). Sample lyrics: "Finally found a girl you couldn't impress/last man on earth still couldn't get kissed" and our favorite snap: "You're a mom and pop/I'm a corporation/I'm the press conference/you're a conversation."We give her credit for rhyming "delusional" with a completely new word: "confusional."

We like it and see no reason why it can't become a real word and replace "confusing," which is much harder to rhyme anyway. Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst gave us "agreeance," so why shouldn't Carey do her part to bring down the English language?

For those with short memories, Eminem keeps insisting that he and Carey had a thing, while she says that didn't. He takes her and hubby Nick Cannon on in a much more profane way on his new album, "Relapse," whereas Carey couldn't be more G-rated here.

"Obsessed" will be great radio/gossip catnip for the first few days since there's nothing we all love so much as a meaningless feud between two people we don't know or really care about. But after that, it will be interesting to see how it fares after the initial "Oh... did she really say that?" dies down.

With its emphasis on the beat and Carey's stuttering chorus, instead of any vocal prowess, "Obsessed" sounds like it could come from Rihanna or Britney Spears (especially in the "uh..uh..uh part) and that's just the way she and her co-producers The-Dream and Tricky Stewart want it.

That's because much more than showing she's got great pipes, which, of course, she does, Carey has to continue to prove that, at 39, she can throw down with the younger girls who are constantly nipping.at.her.heels like in "All About Eve." To her credit, she pulls it off.

Los Angeles Times
Mariah Carey: Are we 'Obsessed'?

What: Mariah Carey's "Obsessed," the first single off her upcoming album.
How is it: This is a feistier Mimi than we're used to, as she comes out firing in the song's opening moments. "Why are you so obsessed with me?" questions an obviously irritated Carey.

Is she lashing out at Eminem? The gossip hounds? A simple scolding at a new breed of pop divas? It doesn't really matter. Either way, it will help Mariah stay in the headlines for weeks to come -- long enough to fuel hype for her album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," which will be conveniently released (on Aug. 25) in time to make the cut for the new Grammy eligibility rules.

With The-Dream and Tricky Stewart sharing production credits, Carey has been molded to fit current trends. The still-ubiquitous Auto-Tune is here (a look she played with on "E=MC2's" "Migrate); this time, it's used to bring a slight electronic manipulation to her trademark wails. No need to worry about hitting high notes when computers are all the rage these days, and the thick, pointed keyboards will allow Carey to fit comfortably on Top-40 play lists that are currently obsessed with Lady Gaga's "Poker Face."

Ultimately, that's the point here, as this seems like a tune pointedly designed to get radio play and provide us press types with some new topics to try to get Carey to address on the red carpet, which she will artfully deflect from now until mid-November.

The song is put-down after put-down, with Carey declaring that she "ain't gonna feed you / Gonna let you starve," and the hard-not-to-quote, "You're a mom and pop / I'm a corporation." She doesn't really sound angry -- just a little bemused at her attackers, even if the high road would have been to ignore them. But the sophisticated route doesn't always generate hype, and "Obsessed" is certainly more lively than her earlier work with The-Dream (the bedroom slow-dance "My Love").

Unfortunately, it's an even more anonymous Carey than ever before. One of the biggest selling points of "E=MC2" was Carey dropping the over-the-top howling, and learning how to sing with a more restrained range. She thankfully left the showboating to the "American Idol" kids, and stayed closer to the rhythms. Yet "Obsessed" again sells out the songbird to her producers.

Is Mariah Carey's 'Obsessed' Directed At Eminem?

Singer seems to get back at the Detroit MC in the lyrics to her new single.

Apparently Mariah Carey has responded to Eminem's taunts from his track "Bagpipes From Baghdad" with her own stinging account of things on "Obsessed," the first single from her upcoming album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

The bouncy number debuted Tuesday (June 16) and from the onset Carey seems to be giving her side of the story. "I was like, 'Why are you so obsessed with me?' " Carey says before the music begins.

The singer never mentions the rapper by name, but the lyrics suggest Em may be the target, as Carey talks about the target's drug problems. "It must be the weed, it must be the E/ 'Cause you be poppin', you get it poppin'," Carey sings. Em recently opened up about his battle with drugs on his latest LP, Relapse.

On the album's "Bagpipes From Baghdad," Em raps about taking Carey back from Nick Cannon. (Carey has denied Eminem's claims that they dated for six months.) "Nick Cannon better back the f--- up," Em warns the actor/musician on the track. "I'm not playing/ I want her back, you punk."

Cannon fired back at Eminem last month, before the rapper softened his dis in a later interview, defusing the tension.

Carey hadn't responded publicly, but on "Obsessed," however, she seems to be getting her laughs in, particularly on the song's chorus.

"Why are you so obsessed with me/ Boy I wanna know/ Lying that you're sexing me/ When everybody knows/ It's clear that you're upset with me," she sings in an Auto-Tune-tinged voice.

Throughout the song, Carey calls the track's subject "delusional" and "confused" and says that the person must be "losing their mind."

Singer/songwriter The-Dream confirmed in a previous interview that the song is definitely directed at someone — but the "Dancing on the Moon" singer who, along with producing partner Tricky Stewart, helmed most of Carey's next project, would not confirm exactly who. "Obsessed" is currently streaming on Carey's Web site.

Who Will Have The Summer Jam of '09?
Mariah Carey, "Obsessed"

Odds That It Will Rule the Summer: 4:1

Just 14 months after 2008's E=MC² album fizzled, Mimi returns, this time with an Auto-Tuned kiss-off to wannabe lotharios (and Eminem?) that will probably be the soundtrack to a million summer hookups and just as many public-intoxication collars. And I'm not just saying that because the hook reminds me so much of Jamie Foxx's "Blame It," either. Glossy, flossy and decidedly "urban," Mariah strikes back. Your radio has been warned.

Mariah Exacts Revenge on Eminem

By Roger Friedman

Mariah Carey is finally getting back at Eminem. Her revenge for his ranting and raving about their alleged "affair" is a witty, biting new single called "Obsessed."

Good for Mariah, who's had to put up with Eminem's lunatic name calling for the last couple of years. Then, just to get publicity, Eminem took more swipes at her on his new CD in a song called "Bagpipes from Baghdad."

In the "song" – a term used loosely – the execrable Eminem calls Carey the "c word." (This is what your kids are spending millions on, folks. Wise up.) He not only attacks the singer but her husband, Nick Cannon, and long ago boyfriend Luis Miguel.

Mariah's comeback is funnier, catchier, and more likely to be a bigger hit. "Why are you obsessed with me?" she sings to one of the best hooks in her storied history. "You're delusional/you're confused/you're losing your mind," Mariah continues. "Lyin' that your sexin' me." Ouch!

And the winner is: Universal Music Group. Both performers record for them. And a feud is always good for business! "Obsessed," by the way, is the first single from Mariah's new album, due August 25th, to be called "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."

Mariah Carey has released a brand new single for the summer of 2009, “Obsessed.” It was written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart and is the first single from her forthcoming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, which is due in stores on August 25 and is Mariah’s 12th studio album and the much anticipated follow-up to her platinum-selling E=MC² and her worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi. It’s hard to find an artist with Carey’s track record who seems to deliver consistently over their entire career. Some things just seem to get better with time and I for one have always been as much a fan of MC’s lower vocal register as her signature high end power. There's no doubt that Mariah can sing like no one else, but sometimes less is best, as is the case on this hypnotic track that is sure to keep MC fans totally “Obsessed!” And is it just me or is there a slim chance that MC is sending a message to a certain someone? BET ON IT!

Song of the Summer: Mariah Carey Dominates

It's late, the weather's nice (for the moment), and we've got big news so we're just gonna lay it on you: Mariah Carey has snatched the No. 1 Song of the Summer spot from the Black Eyed Peas, whose "Boom Boom Pow" is officially overplayed out – and faces an enemy from within: "I Gotta Feeling," by the Black Eyed Peas. Elsewhere, Cobra Starship and the Gossip burst the bounds of their respective genres to offer straight-up summer hotness, and Sean Kingston has us so ready to dance in front of the AC in our unmentionables.

Whether or not it's about Eminem, as some maintain (and the lyrics don't say Marshall Mathers to us – more like Stan), Mariah Carey's "Obsessed" contains one of the all-time great put-downs: "You're a mom-and-pop, I'm a corporation." (And you know Wal-Mart haters are turned on.) If nothing else, Mariah's an institution: Second only to the Beatles in No. 1 singles, she's the closest thing this summer has to a dominant (pun intended) diva – Keri Hilson's gonna touch her? Fergie? And, like the best summer tracks, this song's a shape-shifter: it's a slow jam, but with Gucci Mane on the remix; it's sexy, but a dis track; it's dark, but you'll sing along. Spin us right round, Mariah, and feel free to do so all summer.

1. Mariah Carey, "Obsessed": Congratulations to Mariah on the Power Rankings' first-ever No. 1 debut. On a side note, another notch in Mariah's impressive SOTS CV are her gritty choices in remix partners: following in the footsteps of O.D.B. and Jadakiss come Gucci Mane and the official "Obsessed" remix.

The Bottom Line

"Obsessed" is certainly a change of pace for Mariah Carey who has built one of the most phenomenal pop music careers of all time out of songs primarily about love, sex and inspiration. The new single is a very direct, bordering on nasty, dis reportedly of Eminem but probably of others as well. Lyrically "Obsessed" is interesting, but musically it just doesn't hold up with the standard of Mariah Carey's other work. She sounds surprisingly bored for the words she is singing.

Pros* Clever lyrical put-downs

Cons* Mariah Carey sounds bored* Plodding beat* Bitter tone

Guide Review - Mariah Carey - "Obsessed"

Mariah Carey is clearly settling scores on "Obsessed," but she sounds more like she's making a narcotized plea over the phone. Mariah could learn a thing or two from Britney Spears in this department. The auto-tune drenching of much of the song does not help matters. Those having similar issues in life will surely grab some of the more clever lyrical put-downs here, but the music, a plodding, repetitive beat with little melody, is forgettable.

The most prominent speculation is that this song is a response to Eminem and his track "Bagpipes from Baghdad" where he takes on Carey's husband Nick Cannon. If indeed Eminem is the target, the pithy line, "You a mom and pop, I’m a corporation, I’m the press conference, you a conversation," rings a bit of playground sniping rather than being based in reality considering these are two of the biggest pop stars of all time. However, it will be interesting to see if musical feuding between two major stars is a commercial goldmine for Universal, the home to both artists. If so, expect to see more of this in the future.

One of the most disappointing aspects of "Obsessed" is that an artist with Mariah Carey's career record has elected to choose a bitter, musically weak recording to kick off a major new studio album. Her vocals, historically among the most memorable in pop music history, are drowned by auto-tune leaving a faceless drone on the chorus. I hope she has indeed settled her score here and on the album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel she will return to songs worthy of her talent.

The soon-to-be-hot song of the season comes from Mrs. Nick Cannon, who wants to know, like, "Why you so obsessed with me?" The lead single off Mariah's forthcoming "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (expected release date: Aug. 25) is a crunk-flavored query into the mind of a borderline stalker who fronts like he's all up in Carey's bedroom, when really, if he were the last man on earth, he "still couldn't get this." Sorry, unnamed dude (who could be Eminem), but Mimi "can see right through you like you're bathin' in Windex." With help from Auto-Tune and beat wizards Tricky and The-Dream, Carey's musical stiff-arm ends with some vocal acrobatics to let us know she's still got it. Expect to get "Obsessed" this summer.
